Torre del Vajo, the birth of a Super Tuscan!

The Red Tuscan “Torre del Vajo” was born at the beginning of the nineties from a project of the famous Venetian winemaker Bruno Trentini, today General Manager of Soave Cellars.

The name is due to a tribute to his land, and to the combination of this with the territory and the history of the Estate “Torre a Cenaia”.

Torre (tower), in fact, comes from the name of the estate and from the ancient defensive structure that characterizes the old village of Cenaja, where in a cellar this wine is produced.

Vajo is a word in Venetian dialect indicating one of the main characteristics of that beautiful mountain territory: from the Latin “Vallis”, it means a deep gully in the rock, a valley wedged between the buttresses of a mountain’s walls, and wants to remember the most gentle valleys in the woods of the large Tuscan estate.

The project was ambitious from the beginning. Trentini created a prestigious supertuscan on the most famous Brunello footsteps, adding to the classic Bordeaux blend a small percentage of Syrah and using as a basis the Tuscan grape variety of Black Sangiovese. Here it is grown in the emblazoned F9 clone and in the mixed soil of clay and sand and, in the windy climate of Torre a Cenaia it finds the ideal place to fructify.

As a true Super Tuscan, after a first aging in vitrified cement, the Torre del Vajo rests from 6 to 8 months in barrels of Allier oak.

The period of aging in wood varies from year to year, as well as the percentages of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah which form the blend.

Torre del Vajo, degustando

The goal is to get a red wine with important  features: a very intense ruby red color with violet hues, a complex and persistent bouquet with hints of balsam and berries, an elegant and enveloping flavor of high tannin structure, soft, velvety.

For this reason, each vintage requires time and different  processes, accurate controls and the experience of the best winemakers

Born out of a great wine signature, Torre del Vajo is followed today by the pink pride of the Italian oenology: Mrs Graziana Grassini alias Lady Sassicaia, curator of the famous label of Tenuta San Guido and of the best wines of Tuscany.
